Active Optical Networks (AON) are fiber optic networks that - in contrast to Passive Optical Networks (PON) - also contain "active" components such as switches, routers or multiplexers. This allows them to bridge longer distances and transmit larger bandwidths than PON, but also requires higher installation and operating costs.
