Where to go in the cloud? CAFM in the cloud

Michael studied architecture before he discovered software for himself - and so persistently that he has been part of the IMS management team for more than ten years. If you can not find Michael in the office or with clients, he is definitely out with his family, going for a relaxed dive or skiing in winter.

If you want to use cloud services, you have the choice between your own server farm or four large so-called hyperscalers: The Americans with Amazon Web Service (AWS), Google Cloud (GC) and Microsoft Azure or the Chinese Alibaba Cloud. In the future, Gaia-X will also offer its services as a French-German EU cloud with open source technology and open standards. There comes a question: What solution could or should it be for your own CAFM services?

Control and Security

In the eyes of many, having your own data center has two main advantages: full control and absolute security. But that's only partly true. Full control over the installations is usually given. Absolute security, however, is not simply guaranteed. Why?

Cloud security

Cost and skill

Security in IT requires, on the one hand, the operator's willingness to invest. And it requires very skilled administrators. The reason for this is simple: In the context of malware & Co, there are criminal gangs as well as large government and military units, for example from Russia, China and North Korea, who are excellently trained and deal with exactly one task day in and day out: hacking supposedly secure infrastructures , also in Germany.

Global player

With a view to this threat scenario, there is much to be said for the large, global providers. If it weren't for their origin: an at least partially state-controlled company from a dictatorship. And three companies that strive to maximize profits and in whose home privacy can hardly be compared with our standards. Espionage and betrayal of secrets seem to be programmed in here and there.

GDPR

The good news: You don't have to worry. Anyone who operates a server in the EU is subject to the GDPR. And it sets out clear rules on how to deal with personal data and the subject of data protection in general. Incidentally, that was one of the reasons Microsoft was after putting the "Patriot Act" and its successor "Cloud Act" into effect has increasingly set up servers in Germany: High data protection requirements that are highly relevant for corporate customers (and which annoy the US authorities enormously because they cannot easily access the data).

Gaia-X

Meanwhile are also in the EU Cloud- Identify activities. The Gaia-X project is intended to create an independent, honest and digitally sovereign European cloud. And therein lies the problem: it should. The starting shot for Gaia-X was given in October 2019. Currently, 20 working groups are discussing structure, structure, security and various other key questions that are essential for a highly scaled and high-performance cloud offering. The actual start of the by SAP. Telekom, Siemens, Bosch and Atos-driven solution is planned for the beginning of 2021, with around 300 companies and organizations from science and business. Incidentally, these now also include Microsoft and Amazon.

Cloud Service CAFM IMS

The agony of choice

In theory, you are spoiled for choice. It is not practical. Because Cloud alone does not make you happy, as it helps you to work productively and integratively CAFM Another important question to be asked is: What does the respective cloud offer in terms of a platform? So which technologies and offers from other companies can I integrate into my own system landscape via the respective cloud?

Azure

The widest range currently available, which even includes IoT, is without question Microsoft Azure. In addition, the Americans have the most certificates and offer the cheapest prices. Your security standards are excellent. The customer base is highly sensitive and therefore extremely demanding, so that Azure is currently the cloud service of choice in the context of professional applications.

IMS and cloud

At IMS, too, we (also) rely on Azure and are part of the platform offered by RIB integrate and include other offers. At the same time, we offer hosting and SaaS on IMS 'own machines without external service providers. And keep a sensitive eye on the development in the cloud market, because Gaia-X is always interesting and other providers could also become important, depending on the upcoming development of their portfolio.

As a user, you have the guarantee that you will be able to operate your application in a secure and high-performance environment that offers you many options for expansion and is optimally explored by us.

In addition to security and performance, the future is also built in.

Best regards
